For the first time in France, a city has granted an artist free rein to create a city-wide exhibition, celebrating the 30th anniversary of its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. OTHONIEL COSMOS - An Artist in Avignon follows the remarkable encounter between Avignon and Jean-Michel Othoniel, documenting the creation of an unprecedented exhibition brought together by nearly 600 contributors and showcasing more than 260 works, including 140 new pieces.
With music and poetry at its core, the film delves into the intimate origins of the artist’s creations - from conception to completion, from spirit to substance. It leads us on a sensory journey through workshops around Europe and across the famed Pont Saint-Bénézet in Avignon, culminating in the Cour d’honneur of the Palais des Papes with a unique ballet by Carolyn Carlson, performed by Hugo Marchand and Caroline Osmont of the Paris Opera.
